2010 FRC Excellence in Design Award Entry: Darwin’s Kicker

Project Overview | Full Robot Assembly | Drivetrain | Kicker | Electronics

After more than a dozen prototypes and iterations, Darwin’s Kicker pays homage to initial brainstorm ideas perhaps better than any subsystem ever created by FRC1712. From the beginning the team committed to a compact robot design that could handle the bumps and pass under the tunnels.  Thus the kicker had to fit within a very compact space, yet function effectively and efficiently. The final design incorporates the best parts of our brainstorming and prototyping having a thicker foot and beefier drive shaft than prototypes based on test results.  We also conducted extensive testing with both CIM and Fisher Price motors at multiple ratios and ultimately concluded that using two Fisher Price motors through an AndyMark Double Doozy gearbox, assisted by surgical tube spring for kicking was our best option.
